Cruising to Canada Paperwork

Cruising Paper Work

PEOPLE PAPERWORK
All people entering Canada from the United States by boat must have either a Nexus card or an I68 form on file.   If you do not have a Nexus by now, it is too late for this season and you will need to obtain the I68.  The cost of the I68 is $16 per person or $32 per family.

I68 issuing locations:
Port Huron:  Blue Water Bridge (810-985-9541), Open 24/7
Algonac:  Algonac Ferry Dock  (810-794-3321), 6:30 am to 10:30 pm,

To get an I68 you will need:
  • 3 passport size photos for each person,
  • two proof of citizenship documents, such as  passport/birth certificates, drivers license (photo id),
  • and your boat registration.
Calling in:
  • All persons entering Canada must report in.  When entering Canada with a Nexus card, reporting can be done up to 4 hours before you arrive if everyone on board has a current Nexus card. (1-866-996-3987)
  • If not, when you arrive at the marina, only the captain should go ashore and phone the customs officer to report your arrival.    (1-888-226-7277)  He/she will be expected to provide information for each passenger and the vessel.  A number may be issued at that time to display on your boat or you will be given instructions to remain on board until an officer arrives to inspect your boat.
  • Upon returning to the United States, you must also call in to report you arrival back in the country.  This seems to be easier but it must be done. (810-985-9972)

The following website will give you much more information on the subject

BOAT PAPERWORK
If your boat is 30 feet or longer and traveling to Canada you are required by the United States to have a DTOPS decal.  This can be purchased on line at a cost of $27.50.  The website you will need to access is  https://dtops.cbp.dhs.gov
